Step 1 of 4Process family

Gas, salt-bath, plasma, or a low-temperature variant for stainless. Each delivers nitrogen by a different mechanism, runs in different equipment, and produces a different compound layer chemistry. Gas runs ammonia at 450-590°C in a sealed retort, typical cycle 40-80 hours. Plasma uses a low-pressure N₂/H₂ glow discharge at 380-560°C, typical cycle 10-30 hours. Salt-bath runs molten cyanate salts at 550-590°C, typical cycle 90 minutes to 6 hours and almost always with a carbon source (FNC). Lessons 3 through 6 cover the families one at a time.

Quick check

A precision Nitralloy gear must hold a 0.02 mm flatness budget after nitride. Which process family is the default call, and why?
